Class: Shoemaking

This class will take you through the tools and materials needed to make turnshoes, a shoe style commonly found in almost all medieval periods. Students will make a pattern for their own shoes and go home with the knowledge to repeat the process! All tools and materials will be provided.

Bring your spinning wheel, e-spinner, or drop spindle and come spin some fiber! We will discuss different types of fibers, drafting, woolen vs. worsted spun fiber, S-twist and Z-twist, thick ‘n’ thin yarns, and ply structures. Some fiber will be available, but please feel free to bring something you want to spin.

All skill levels welcome but this class is geared for beginners. Materials and tutorial provided, but you must have a sewing machine. Please also bring thread and fabric scissors.

Class: Card (or Tablet) Weaving

This class will take you through a basic understanding of tablet weaving, from warping your loom and threading your cards, to how to create patterns and designs in your weaving. Students will go through these steps and experiment with threaded in patterns and doubleface. All tools and materials will be provided.

Viking knit is an ancient form of circular wire weaving also known as the Trichinopoly chain. Using the term “chain” is misleading because there are no separate links. The chain is formed with a single length of looped wire around a shaft, resulting in a long tube which is then stretched. All materials provided. You will leave with a few supplies to do your own at home, and possibly a completed piece.
